In the pier area there used to be a man selling rice bran crackers as deer food and lots of deer gathered there. But selling of the deer food was prohibited last year and the number of the deer dramatically decreased since then, at least aroung the pier. Here in the camping area, the animals are wilder. They mainly feed on short grass originally transplanted on the play field 30 years ago. So they are not so hungry compared to those in the pier area. But still there are some of the deer which come closer expecting something to eat given to them.
Diary of a middle-aged Japanese wildlife biologist and his family. Yamaguchi City is a beautiful old town and a capital of Yamaguchi Prefecture that is located in the westernmost part of Honshu Island. We will write about our life here and nature of Japan.

Miyajima sika deer
We visit Miyajima island on the monthly basis for deer research. Recent visit was last week. We count the number of animals and collect their feces.
