Miyajima deer

We visited Miyajima Island last week for the monthly deer research.

The major objective this time was to count the fawns that were born this year.

But we couldn't find many. This female is so small but she is at least 2 years old.

Bucks and does are everywhere, but finding a baby isn't easy since reproduction rate is low in this population.

This is a new born baby. Cute.

There are many tamed and fed deer around the pier and shrines. They are abnormal animals and are probably suffering from malnutrition.

Once we go to the opposite side from the pier we start finding a rather healthy population with quite a few babies.

It was an extremely hot sunny day. To avoid having heatstroke we had to have a break at a small cafe/restaurant for refreshment. The girls ordered a flavored shaved ice, which is a popular summer refreshment in Japan. I don't like it though, since it's too cold.
